Wednesday March 5, 2025 4:31am EST, Washington, D.C. — Congressional Democrats signaled to the world at Tuesday evening’s Joint Presidential Address to Congress, that they will not be pushed around by Republicans any longer. Texas Democrat Al Green brought the speech to a halt with his loud objection to Trump’s cuts to Medicaid for the poor.

“I have the largest mandate in the history of our country,” Trump said, “to cut the fraud from Medicare and Medicaid.”

Rep Green interrupted, “Nobody gave you a mandate to cut Medicaid. And I have people in my district who desperately rely on Medicaid.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana quickly gaveled the House to order and instructed the Sergeant at Arms to remove Congressman Green from the chamber. As Green was escorted out of the House over cheers from Republicans, he waived his golden-handled cane in the air while his fellow Democrats shrunk in their seats and stared wide-eyed at their shoes.

“I do like gold,” Trump said, as Green taunted him with it. “And get me that cane, Sergeant. Let’s see how gimpy gets along without it.”

Moments later the Sergeant at Arms returned to the podium and knelt as he handed the ornate golden-handled cane to Trump. The President took the cane, stepped back from the podium, and made a golf swing with it, which brought Republicans to their feet and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, to tears.

“I was crying, not out of weakness, but out of empathy for all of the elderly golfers who can’t afford clubs.” Schumer later clarified.

Congressman Green spoke to reporters as he lay on the floor in the hallway outside of the chamber. “It’s time for Democrats to stand up to this madness!” he shouted, while spinning angrily on the newly-waxed floor. “Stand up! Stand up!”

Inside the chamber, seated Democrats held up signs, fashioned like auction paddles, but printed with slogans. The graphic nature of the phrases printed on these black signs was so shocking that the Sergeant at Arms momentarily wrestled with 83-year-old Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, but was unable to wrest Sanders’ paddle away. Sanders’ paddle read False. Some democrats scribbled on small white boards, one from the California delegation reading, I know you are, but what am I? Oregon’s senior senator held a whiteboard reading You’re NOT the Boss of me! Perhaps the most chilling message was on the paddle held up by NY Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which read I Don’t Think So.

The speech devolved into a melee when Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries of NY blew a spitball through a plastic straw that lodged in the well-combed hair of Speaker Mike Johnson. Trump’s speech could only resume after Vice-President Vance gently removed the spitball from the panicked Speaker’s hair and eating it. The Vice-President then perfectly styled Johnson’s tussled hair back to perfection. Johnson, who was carefully made-up in Trump’s signature heavy orange base, was not seriously injured in the attack and House Leader Jeffries later apologized for going so far over the line.
